So – my grandparents and my mom each had a dog when I was little. When I started to teeth, I kept getting rawhide strips out of the dogs’ bowls. My mom took me to the pediatrician and asked how wise it was for me to chew on the rawhide, and the pediatrician was like “Just give her new ones to chew on. The rawhide probably feels good on her teeth.” Now – I DO realize that I was teething in 1975, but y’know, I’m sure I chewed on plenty of already chewed on rawhides. I’m just sayin’.

And I am also in the “a little dirt is good for them” camp. Along with “it’s okay to fall off the swing set every once in a while” camp.

Naomi licks the kids all of the time. Now that they are big two and a half year olds they say “No Lickies” to her and she’ll stop. As babies, I’d let Naomi get a few good licks in and then tell her “No Lickies”. She’d always go for the face (still does), though, not the hands… hands are totally preferable!

I’m glad to hear things are settling down around there. Every month will get easier (and more challenging in other ways), and more fun!

Growing up, my parents’ dogs would ‘clean us’ after we had eaten a cookie (in the walker… also a no-no now). 3 large St. Bernards licking children covered in cookie. All 3 are fine. BUT, our dogs walked through our Metro-Boston home and yard, not NYC.

But, kudos for you: studies have shown for a long time that children raised in homes w/ furry pets have lower incidence of allergies:)
